Many people are wondering why Bo-Katan uses the dark saber so well in The Mandalorian.. Although Din Djarin is the current owner of the dark saber, the Mandalorian continues to use it better. Pedro Pascal’s hero inadvertently acquired the legendary lightsaber after defeating Moff Gideon in Season 2. And he, too, became the rightful ruler of Mandalore. According to tradition, the saber must be won in combat. Many Mandalorians seem to blame the Mandalore Purge on Katee Sackhoff’s character for having received it in a way that was not according to tradition. She doesn’t want to repeat this mistake, so she has lost everything she longed for.
Even so, Bo-Katan is the one who best wields the dark saber. In The Mandalorian season 3 episode 2, Din Djarin endeavors to use it against the Alamite raiders. Later, she uses the saber against a gruesome cyborg scavenger crustacean. And she has no problem swinging the sword and killing the enemy. The episode makes the contrast really visible between both characters.
Explanation why she can use it better than Din Djarin
It is not the first time that Din Djarin has trouble wielding the dark saber. Those same problems appear in episode 5 of The Book of Boba Fett. The Armorer explains that this lightsaber, so unusual in the Star Wars universe, requires its wielder to be focused in mind and body. He needs a singular focus on The Mandalorian. And so Moff Gideon was able to use it with ease. He is dedicated to restoring the Galactic Empire throughout the galaxy.
Naturally, the same Darksaber rules from The Mandalorian apply to Bo-Katan, though she wields the weapon with ease against Djarin’s captor. Presumably this is because he possesses much more confidence in his identity, even as he has lost faith in his mission to restore Mandalore.. He has no problem killing the cyborg and saving Din Djarin. And he returns the lightsaber to her (almost without hesitation) when the danger has passed. It seems that both will not fight for the saber, since it is supposedly against the Mandalorian’s personal code of honor to duel with an ally.
