BAKHMUT – The head of the mercenary group Wagner Group Yevgeny Prigozhin reveals the main reasons why Russia refused to end his war in Ukraine . According to him, it was because Kiev kept trying to reclaim the land it controlled before 2014.
“I am absolutely sure that Ukraine, with the help of the NATO bloc, will break through this ‘red line’ and return its territory until 2014,” Prigozhin said in a statement posted to Telegram via his company’s website page.
“There is no doubt that the war will start again,” he said, as quoted by Newsweek, Monday (6/3/2023).
“Such a conflict may turn out to be even more tragic and bloody than the first. Therefore, we need to fight for Russia here and now,” said the oligarch known as Russian President Vladimir Putin’s “chef”.
Prigozhin is a prominent and outspoken voice among the Russian elite and is a close associate of President Putin. However, he was highly critical of Russia’s conventional military forces and the Defense Ministry.
Wagner Group mercenaries have been heavily involved in the Russian operation to capture the town of Bakhmut in eastern Donetsk, an area which has been under intensive bombardment for months.
“The most advanced and prepared elements of the Wagner paramilitary uniform have already fought in raid operations around the city,” said the Institute for the Study of War (ISW) think tank.
ISW said Wagner’s mercenaries, along with the Russian armed forces, appeared to be preparing for a “countermovement”, which would force the Kiev forces to abandon their defensive positions in the devastated city.
