MOSCOW – Private military groups Russia , Group Wagner de facto completely surrounded the city Ukraine , Bakhmut. The claim was announced by the group’s leader Yevgeniy Prigozhin.
In a video apparently taken on the outskirts of the city, the leader of the Wagner Group privately addresses Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, telling him that the city of Donbass has been under siege and there is now only one road left outside the city.
“The clamp will close,” Prigozhin announced as quoted by RT, Friday (3/3/2023).
He added that before the Wagner Group had fought professional Ukrainian soldiers, it was now encountering more old people and children.
“They fought, but life under Bakhmut was short. One or two days,” said Prigozhin.
The Wagner Group boss urges the Ukrainian president to allow them to leave town as the camera pans to what appear to be captured Ukrainian soldiers. Among them was a man with a long gray beard and two very young looking men.
They also issued a petition to Zelensky, asking him to allow them to return to their families and loved ones and not to ignore their requests.
The town of Bakhmut, which has seen some of the heaviest fighting amid Russia’s ongoing military campaign, is part of a 70 km long Ukrainian defensive line created since Kiev began fighting in the Donbass in 2014.
