You may have noticed when your last package was delivered: more and more vans are under power. Volkswagen also jumped on that bandwagon early on with the e-Crafter, but after that it was a matter of waiting for the ID. Buzz before we were allowed to find another space wonder with a plug port with them. However, that needs to change, and it may come sooner than you think.
California motorhome with plug?
Chairman Carsten Intra has opened the booklet about the future plans of Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles. And some of those future plans are already very close, because the CEO promises an ID this year. Buzz with long wheelbase. Afterwards, there would actually be a plug-in hybrid version of the current Caddy, presumably in 2024. A new, purely electric van is planned for that year, which is being developed together with Ford, although it is not yet entirely clear whether it will be this is a new Crafter or a new Transporter. If it’s the latter, it could use the same base as the recently unveiled Ford e-Transit.
We find even more plug news in Intra’s statements about the California camping range, although it is a thoughtful one. For example, the boss reveals that they are currently developing a new California based on the T7 Multivan, because they want to develop a real ‘California Universe’ where customers can choose from motorhomes of all sizes. The new Multivan is also available with a plug-in hybrid powertrain, so there is a good chance that this will be their first campervan with a plug-in port. We will get certainty this year, the T7 California must still be presented in 2023.
