Nationally five hundred to six hundred new cancer patients per year and in Overijssel alone already 200 million euros in remediation costs. The bad guy? Asbestos. Its use was banned in 1993, but for decades it was seen as ‘the magical mineral’: strong, heat-resistant, wear-resistant and above all cheap. Goor once housed one of the largest asbestos factories in the Netherlands: Eternit. The company still exists and today makes fiber cement products. Yet asbestos was their revenue model for a long time. The region around it lives with the consequences to this day.
