WASHINGTON – United States of America (US) is very concerned about the political turmoil and endless demonstrations in Indonesia Israel . The US also “strongly urges” leaders there to find a compromise as soon as possible.
This was announced by a spokesperson for the White House on Sunday (26/3/2023), after the dismissal of the Israeli Minister of Defense sparked mass protests.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu sacked Defense Minister Yoav Gallant at the weekend, a day after Gallant cut ties with the government and urged a halt to highly contested plans to overhaul the justice system.
“We continue to urge Israeli leaders to find a compromise as soon as possible. We believe it is the best course of action for Israel and all of its citizens,” White House National Security Council spokeswoman Adrienne Watson said in a statement.
About three months since taking office, Netanyahu’s religious-nationalist coalition has been plunged into crisis by the bitter divisions exposed by his flagship judicial overhaul plan. Netanyahu’s move was met with strong opposition from various quarters.
The reshuffle package would tighten political control over judicial appointments, giving the executive greater freedom to appoint judges to the Supreme Court.
“As the president recently discussed with Prime Minister Netanyahu, democratic values have always been, and must remain, a hallmark of the US-Israel relationship,” Watson said.
“Democratic society is strengthened by checks and balances, and fundamental changes to the democratic system must be pursued with the widest possible base of popular support,” he continued.
