KIEV – PBB said he was “deeply concerned” by the summary execution prisoner of war done by the team Russia and Ukraine on the battlefield. The one-year war has spawned multiple accusations of human rights violations.
The accusations came shortly after Kiev accused Russian forces of killing a captured Ukrainian soldier. In the filmed execution, the soldier says “Glory to Ukraine” before being shot dead.
The head of the UN Human Rights Monitoring Mission in Ukraine, Matilda Bogner, said her organization had recently recorded killings by both sides.
“We are deeply concerned about the summary execution of 25 Russian prisoners of war and hors de combat persons by the Ukrainian armed forces, which we have documented,” Bogner told a news conference in Kiev. /2023).
“This is often done soon after being arrested on the battlefield. Although we are aware of ongoing investigations by Ukrainian authorities into five cases involving 22 victims, we are not aware of any prosecution of the perpetrators,” he added.
Bogner also expressed “deep” concern over the alleged execution of 15 Ukrainian prisoners by the Russian Armed Forces following their arrest.
He said the Wagner mercenary group, which admits to leading the Russian assault on Bakhmut – the war’s longest and bloodiest battle – was responsible for the 11 killings.
Moscow and Kiev have accused each other of mistreating POWs since Russian President Vladimir Putin invaded more than a year ago.
