The most successful character by far from the already extinct (or not?) Ultimate universe continues at a good pace accumulating adventures and separating his life more and more from that of the Spiderman classic in the comprehensive compilation that makes Panini Comics of his series in deluxe format. The last to arrive is titled Ultimate Integral. Ultimate Spiderman 9 – Masacre.
The wall-crawler of the Tierra 616 He is already characterized, contrary to his own concept of a loser nerd, for being a true conqueror when it comes to romantic relationships. Yeah, Mary Jane Watson is the great love of his life (with permission from Gwen Stacy), with whom he got married and had a daughter, but his life has been very long and the moments without MJ, numerous. His version of the Tierra 1610 It’s not too different in this regard.
This story begins at a time when Peter Parker he’s recently broken up with MJ, and since Gwen isn’t an option here to run into (she’s dead, small inconvenience), his attention will end up falling on another young woman. And in this case she is a character with tradition, well known to all readers of Marvel Comicsand that is somehow a reflection of Peter on the mutant side: Kitty Pryde.
The relationship between the two will have a beginning that will provide the scriptwriter Brian Michel Bendis not a few occasions to show off with those continuous give and take dialogues that he is so good at (despite the fact that some readers don’t like the talking heads pages too much) through which a beautiful adolescent chemistry is established. This is one of the Cleveland’s strengths, and one of the reasons why this tome shines.
Peter left MJ for the usual: the fear that his life as a superhero would end up harming her, something that, let’s face it, happens all the time with Parker’s partners: when it’s not about a supervillain kidnapping her, it’s about of being in the wrong place at the wrong time. However, with Kitty (whose mutant power consists, among other things, of her objects literally passing through her without harming her) this problem does not exist.
Kitty will not be a brief visit in the life of the wall-crawler, but will accompany him, at least, in all the adventures that he will have in this volume. But the truth is that at no time will we see Kitty with a real chance of occupying a place above MJ in Peter’s heart…
Heroes, villains and everything in between
But Kitty Pryde will not be the only character known to the regular reader of the Marvel Universe What are we going to see here? We will have cameos like Rojo Omegalos X-Menhe Vulturelos Ultimateshe bander, Rhino, Blade, Daredevil o Punisher among others, but the weight of each of the three story arcs contained herein is carried by other characters…
silver sable It is the fruit of a dysfunctional home. As an adult, she has become a bounty hunter who we will now see at the service of Roxxon to hunt the wall-crawler, and it will become its scourge for quite a few numbers. The most curious thing about the subject is that Roxxon is actually only looking for the web launcher to find out the reason why he is defending his businesses from attacks by supervillains, since this man does not believe in coincidences…
Slaughter is presented here as a veteran of the war in Wakanda and will have the harvesters like his mercenary minions. Both Massacre and the Reapers have undergone various surgeries and cybernetic modifications in order to catch up with the mutants, since their goal is nothing more and nothing less than to destroy this race. Bendis will manage so that, without breaking the fourth wall, the character continues to address the reader directly from time to time…
Finally we will have Morbiuswhat He is here a true vampire, nothing of a white mark. But just like in the traditional version of him, the character will be positioned on the side of good, as he will fight his vampiric hunger and try to face his equals to protect weak humans from becoming bloodsuckers.
Bendis doing what he does best
This volume does not stand out for telling us tremendously interesting stories but for placing the focus on Parker, his concerns and his relationships, and that is when the narration is exquisite. All the credit to Mr. Bendis, a true master when it comes to tackling this type of plot.
In the graphic section we have a correct Mark Bagley whose work, as in the rest of the series since its inception, suffers above all from a rather strange characterization of characters, making what should be teenagers in the prime of life look like junkies who have been partying non-stop for 5 days…
