FC Groningen has appointed Dick Lukkien as head coach for the next three years. The 50-year-old Groninger will come over from FC Emmen after this season and signed a contract until the summer of 2026. Lukkien’s transfer leaked out on Sunday, shortly before Groningen’s league match against sc Heerenveen, and was completed on Monday.
FC Emmen and FC Groningen are currently competing against each other in the fight against relegation from the Eredivisie. Emmen is in sixteenth place with 21 points, Groningen with 4 points less. Only SC Cambuur has fewer points (16).
Lukkien, who himself played football for BV Veendam for years, also worked at FC Groningen between 2010 and 2016. First as a trainer of the second team, then as an assistant to the main force. FC Emmen was promoted to the Eredivisie for the first time in 2018 under the leadership of Lukkien.
FC Groningen started this season with Frank Wormuth as trainer, but the German was fired after a few months. The club appointed Dennis van der Ree as interim trainer. Van der Ree finishes the season, but then leaves FC Groningen.
