THE HAGUE – The International Criminal Court (ICC) reacts to a nuclear capable hyperosnic missile attack Russia after issuing a warrant for the arrest of the President Vladimir Putin .
The ICC is seeking to arrest the Kremlin leader on suspicion of war crimes in Ukraine.
The threat of a missile strike was made by Deputy Head of the Security Council and former Russian President Dmitry Medvedev. In addition, Russia’s top investigative body opened a criminal case against ICC Prosecutor Karim Khan as well as the judge who issued the warrant for Putin.
The presidency of the Assembly of States Parties to the ICC is concerned about the threat. “Deplores this attempt to hinder international efforts to ensure accountability for acts prohibited under international law,” the presidency said in a statement.
“The Assembly also reaffirms its unwavering support for the International Criminal Court,” the presidency continued.
“The International Criminal Court embodies our shared commitment to fighting impunity for the most serious international crimes. As institutions of last resort, courts complement national jurisdiction. We ask all countries to respect the independence of the judiciary and its prosecution,” the presidential statement added, as quoted by Al Jazeera, Thursday (23/3/2023).
Medvedev on Monday threatened to strike a nuclear-capable Onyx hypersonic missile against the ICC building in The Hague. “It is quite possible to imagine a hypersonic missile fired from the North Sea from a Russian ship at the Hague courthouse,” he said.
“Everyone walks under God and missiles… Look carefully at the sky…,” he said.
The ICC arrest warrant for Putin, issued on Friday last week, accuses the Russian leader of unlawfully deporting thousands of Ukrainian children, an accusation that amounts to a war crime.
