Last Friday (March 17), news broke of the sudden death of American actor Lance Reddick, at the age of 60. Reddick was especially known for his roles in The Wire series and in the John Wick movies.
In addition to his iconic film and television roles, Reddick was also well known in the gaming community due to his characters in the Destiny franchise and the games Horizon Zero Dawn and Forbidden West. In the latter, he played the enigmatic nomad Sylens, while in Destiny, he played the unforgettable Commander Zavala.
Reddick had a huge impact on the Destiny franchise, having first appeared in the game in 2014 and was a part of the series for nearly a decade. Following the announcement of his death, Destiny developers Bungie posted a statement on Twitter.
The statement read: “Lance Reddick was an iconic presence on screen, in Destiny, and most importantly, in person. His love for our community shone through Commander Zavala, in his unwavering dedication to his craft, and in radiant kindness.” that touched those around him. To say he will be missed is a profound understatement, but no less true. Rest in peace, Lance.”
VGC reported that Destiny fans have been celebrating Reddick’s life and contributions to the series within the game. Thousands of people have gathered in La Torre, where Comandante Zavala is located, to pay tribute to him.
One Twitter user, @Pharaoh_Rising, shared his sentiments with a screenshot of his character kneeling in front of Zavala: “Rest in peace Comandante Zavala. I didn’t know how imprinted your work as a voice actor was on me until now. It’s been almost 10 years of countless hours listening to your voice. It won’t be the same without you… I will always cherish you Lance Reddick, Commander Zavala.”
