Pokémon Scarlet and Purple continues its exciting regional championships ahead of the baneful legends’ arrival in competitive.
A rather interesting regional competition was held in Vancouver last weekend, where we saw some of the best teams show off their skills in doubles combat. And most of them had Pokémon Paradox, which just entered Series 2 of the Pokémon Championships.
But in addition to the more common monsters within the meta, Glimmora appeared in combat unexpectedly. And although she is not even in the Top 15 of the most used, her participation has given a lot to talk about.
What is the Vancouver Regional Championship?
The Vancouver Regional Championship is one of three tournaments scheduled for March 2023 along with Knoxville and Charlotte.
This particular championship is the fourth of 2023 on the North American circuit. All regionals scheduled for this year will be played in the Standard format, although there are some exceptions for side events in the Expanded format. Pokémon Scarlet and Pokémon Purple for Nintendo Switch will be the main game of this season.
The rules are quite simple: double fights of a maximum of 20 minutes in which the best of three will win. Only Pokémon and moves obtained in Pokemon Scarlet and Purple, transferred from HOME, or obtained in special events. The Pokémon’s level is automatically changed to 50 and the same equipped item cannot be repeated on the team.
Something interesting is that these championships are played with a public team roster. This means that each player must give his opponent a list with the following information about his team:
Pokemon species. It must be specified if there are regional variants or forms between them.Skill.Equipped items. All known moves.Teratype.
He has not yet started the third set of Pokemon Scarlet and Purple, so the legendary Wo-Chien, Chien-Pao, Ting-Lu and Chi-Yu will not be allowed. At least until April 1, 2023.
Glimmora appears in the Championship of Pokemon Scarlet and Purple
After knowing the above rules, it will surely seem strange to you that a monster outside the meta like Glimmora is used in a championship of Pokemon Scarlet and Purple.
Well, two players surprised us with the lovely flower mineral in their lineups, and the results were pretty epic.
Zackary Thornberg of the United States led Glimmora along with Sylveon, Ceruledge, Tatsugiri Curved Form, Dondozo, and Melenaleteo. Neil Patel from Canada also surprised us on day two with Glimmora on his team along with Ferrosac, Longtusk, Curved Tatsugiri, Dondozo and Dragonite.
The weird thing about this is that Glimmora isn’t exactly in the current meta. The competitive one is dominated by the powerful Paradox Pokémon, along with some exceptions such as Arcanine, Palafin, Amoongus and Dragonite. But Palafin didn’t show up on the second day, and instead we got a chance to see Glimmora vying for the win.
It has to be said that both players who used Glimmora lost, although Zackary Thornberg came very close to victory with a heart-stopping ending that you can see here. Even so, the inclusion of new monsters in the competitive Pokemon Scarlet and Purple always something fun to watch.
What is the strategy behind Glimmora in Pokémon Scaralt and Purple?
Glimmora was first introduced in Pokemon Scarlet and Purple like the evolution of Glimmet.
It is a Rock and Poison type Pokémon, so it is resistant to Bug, Fire, Fairy, Normal and Flying types. It even has immunity to the Poison type. However, it is weak against Steel, Water, and Psychic-type attacks; as well as super weak to Ground types.
In a matter of statistics, it has a 525 base, and stands out mainly for its offensive capacity:
Special Attack: 130 Defense: 90 Speed: 86 PS: 83 Special Defense: 81 Attack: 55
His biggest draw is his Toxic Cloak signature ability, which unfurls a layer of toxic spikes when Glimmora is hit by a physical attack. It can stack up to two times and is very easy to activate with many physical attacking Pokémon in the meta like Ironpalms and Longfang.
Area attacks are great for team fights, but spikes are very efficient at dealing passive damage when a new Pokémon comes into battle. This will take away HP without having to spend a turn applying an effect.
The idea behind Glimmora in the competitive of Pokemon Scarlet and Purple was to deal passive damage with Toxic Cloak and taking advantage of his high Special Attack. And we could see the damage during the fights, although unfortunately there were too many obstacles. This includes Baxcalibur with an Earthquake priority attack, and the popular Heroic Palafin and Amoonguss strategy.
