It would have been spectacular to see Justice League Dark in the cinema, but now we know why that didn’t happen.
Director Gerard Johnstone has achieved tremendous success with M3GAN, a horror film about a killer doll. Since with a budget of about 12 million dollars, they have raised more than 175 million. Now, he reveals in a recent interview with SR the reason why he couldn’t make his Justice League Dark movie.
“It was a tough time for DC Comics… They told me they didn’t want to spend money on another new movie with a bunch of characters no one had ever heard of, and I understand that. It was a shame”.

What was this movie going to be about?
Gerard Johnstone reveals a brief synopsis of his Justice League Dark.
“I was really halfway through the script writing process with that one. So Deadman, Swamp Thing, Constantine, and Zatanna. I felt like Zatanna was actually the main character, and there were a lot of conversations and pushes that I had with the guys, because they were like, Constantine is the main character. I thought: No, Constantine is the coolest character. But Zatanna is really the main character.”
“The plot would have seen the group come together for the first time and venture into Hell to rescue Zatanna’s father.”
Zatanna
It sounds really interesting and it’s something we haven’t seen in any of the superhero genre movies that have been released in recent years. And that many have been done!
Gerard Johnstone concluded by saying: “I would be delighted to have a meeting with the current co-CEO of DC Studios, James Gunn, about the project.”
Although for now, it does not seem that there are plans to make a Justice League Dark installment, it must be recognized that James Gunn loves to make movies and series of little-known characters from comics. Since, the Guardians of the Galaxy were not as popular as before the 2014 movie and the members of their Suicide Squad are almost all quite secondary.
Without forgetting that they will make a film about the origins of Swamp Thing (the Swamp Thing) one of the members of the Justice League Dark. So it could be a prequel to Gerard Johnstone’s project, if they decide to take it forward.
Meanwhile, DC Comics continues with its premieres and after Shazam! The fury of the gods will arrive The Flash on June 16 and at the end of the year we will see Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom (December 22, 2023).
