This is the hypothesis made by the Superintendent of Archaeology, fine arts and landscape of Milan Carpani: “It will be evaluated when the legal requirement matures”
San Siro protected by a restriction? This is what the Superintendent of Archaeology, fine arts and landscape for the metropolitan city of Milan, Emanuela Carpani, claims. You said it on the sidelines of a meeting at Palazzo Marino with the mayor of Milan Giuseppe Sala. The San Siro stadium will certainly not be demolished until 2026 given that “we all know that the inauguration ceremony of the Olympics is scheduled for 2026 – he underlined -. And in any case, before demolishing it, you need to have a structure where you can send the teams to play. It’s not something you do in a month or even three months.”
No constraints

On San Siro, explained Carpani, at the moment there are no restrictions: “At the moment on the San Siro area, specifically the lot, there is neither a landscape nor a cultural restriction. In other neighboring areas, however, there are prerequisites for protection by the cultural heritage code, but not there at the moment”. A constraint could be triggered (the “Simple cultural interest verification”) once the plant will mature 70 years of life: “It is a stadium that as we all know is a kind of onion, the first phase dates back to the 20s-‘ 30, the second from the 1950s – said the Superintendent – and then the arrangement for the 1990 World Cup with the towers and the third ring”. In any case, the fact that from 2025 there is the possibility of the restriction does not mean that it will be triggered given that “we have to wait for the legal requirement to mature because you cannot do it before. It would be an abuse of office – he continued -. At the moment in which the legal requirement will accrue will be evaluated”. If a possible restructuring of the stadium were to be proposed between now and 2025, the project could still go ahead: “At present, yes, it could be done – he concluded – if by restructuring we mean the redevelopment of the existing stadium, even better”.
