In The Silver Coin we saw in its first volume how, after various passages, this malignant object taught us its origin in Puritan New England in the 17th century, we once again have it between our fingers. Panini Comics continues to offer different stories where a simple coin makes an absolute difference.
Sin is my food
The presence of cursed objects is a benchmark in terror. From dolls to religious objects and going back to the remote past where thirty pieces of silver were the sample of one of the biggest betrayals in history (even if it is simply literary for those who do not believe in the Catholic religion). There have been multiple references to material goods that have welcomed the presence of demons or entities whose evil was dominant due to exerting a negative influence on their bearers or directly those who held a title of possession. Our silver coin is no exception, it is capable of bringing out the worst in everyone.
Its power of attraction is practically irresistible, it influences its guardian and those around it. He extracts corrupted desires and twists them further, as if that was the goal the witch bestowed on him at the end of the previous tome, a curse that claims the blood of anyone, innocent or unredeemed sinner. The price is always too high once the objective has been achieved, rivers of blood that are perpetuated over time after managing to purge the vileness of being invincible in recreational and gambling games, the obsession of the collector of shiny objects or economic corruption for prevail over weak segregated citizens.
The origin of evil
The concatenation of stories, which seem to have no more relationship with each other than the presence of the cursed coin, are a hallmark of the work, but every four installments we have had a fifth that has opened our eyes more about the its actual nature. A literary resource that helps us stay hooked on the story, is like the promise of finding something behind it, our own silver coin in search of answers. Because we read not just for the pleasure of doing it, we read to find fun, to find in drama, action, comedy or terror that way of escaping from our day to day. And we need to find a compensation, a lesson, a satisfaction.
The solutions to certain questions are easy for us to assimilate, they also require us to pay a price, one that we are happy to satisfy, especially if the prize is to be delighted with the end of this volume. A choral work that drinks directly from the source that is its cartoonist, Michael Walsh, author of the script for those very special episodes that give shape to the work, which so aptly decided to publish Image Comics in the United States. In the end, everything is connected, it is part of the necessary path that leads us to understand what Walsh wants to tell us. A story about the inherent evil of the human being, about how easy it is to fall into different temptations, to let ourselves be carried away by the minimum effort to achieve the greatest prize.
those who have to write
If we were already able to enjoy Ed Brisson, Jeff Lemire, Kelly Thomson and Chip Zdarsky at the start of the story, now we cannot say that the level has dropped one iota. For numbers 6 to 9 we have Joshua Williamson, Ram V, Matthew Rosenberg and Vita Ayala, doing a commendable job but with a story that stands out among the others, that of Ayala and his reference to the reality of the Bronx of the years seventy. A story that reflects the social harshness of marginalization, poverty and the way those who have no scruples take advantage of it, with the damn shadow of money dirtying everything.
Despite having a satisfying ending, this is not the end of The Silver Coin. The series has another complete arc that finished being published in the USA in October of last year and for now marks the end of this anthology of terrifying stories. For her, James Tynion IV, Stephanie Phillips, Johnnie Christmas and Pornsak Pichetshote have been invited as guest scriptwriters for this marvel directed by Michael Walsh with a firm hand, who once again reserves the full authorship of episode 15. This 2023 we will have it complete here and if nothing prevents the review we can offer it to you in Cinemascomics, although it is better that you run for the comic.
