“I made an oath to Craig Mazin that I wasn’t going to look at the comments, and I feel like I’ve broken that in a bit of a dramatic way in the last few weeks. I am well aware that there is a gay army on Twitter that supports Ellie and me. (Those fans) are much louder than anyone who still hates the show, or the homophobic trolls. That feels good,” said the young actress.
Of course, not everything is negativity. Bella Ramsey was very happy that fans of the Naughty Dog video game enjoy the HBO series. “That’s the most valuable thing: when players who are very interested in the game say ‘this is very good and lives up to expectations.’ Seeing those reactions feels great,” she stated.
Episode 3 of The Last of Us, which showcased Bill and Frank’s romance, is the lowest rated to date. Precisely, much of the criticism is directed at the homosexual relationship of these characters. Episode 7, which featured Ellie and Riley’s relationship, was also the target of negative comments, and even faced censorship.
A few weeks ago, Bella Ramsey addressed the backlash, asking homophobic fans to stop watching the TV series if they find it too diverse. Other people involved in the production, such as actor Nick Offerman and actress Storm Reid, sent similar messages.
