It happens in the match between Bogliasco and San Desiderio, Promotion championship in Liguria. The visiting goalkeeper’s mistake could not be validated by regulation
Free kick, beats the goalkeeper, puts the ball directly into his own goal. It seems absurd but it is reality. This is what happened last Sunday in Bogliasco, at the “Riccardo Garrone” field, in the promotion group B match between the hosts and San Desiderio. And yet, there is a big “but”: because that goal, or rather that own goal, would have been cancelled. It almost seems that it is a formal defect, a hole in the regulation given the singularity of the situation.
The facts
—
Going in order, let’s retrace what happened: in the first half hour of the game Bogliasco steered the game strongly with a brace from Gatto and the first half ended with the hosts ahead by two lengths. At the start of the second half, just in the 1st minute of the second half, San Desiderio shortens with Casella and returns unpredictability to the match. But in the 28th minute there was the key episode: a free kick for the visitors, close to the back line on the left wing. Close enough to convince the team to leave the shot to goalkeeper Piazza, who kicks with the inside of his left foot and actually catches the corner of his own goal. Goal. The “Sande” protests, but the referee Luca Prastaro considers everything regular. The two assistants, Rushanaj and Loredana, could go to his rescue, but the goal is still validated. Yet the regulation is clear: “If a player, whether voluntarily or not, due to unfortunate events or otherwise, sends the ball directly into his goal from a goal kick, lineout or free kick, whether direct or indirect, the goal cannot be validated. The match must be restarted with a corner kick”. Translated: it is not possible to score an own goal directly from a standstill. We need to understand what will happen now: the match ended 4-1, but if the referee were to admit the error in the scoresheet, the sports judge would have to impose a repeat of the whole match. A request not expressed by San Desiderio, but – simply reading the regulation – it would be correct to go in that direction.
