As drivers, our obligations are not limited to complying with traffic regulations. In addition, we must meet a series of requirements to guarantee that we have everything in order: both the car and the permissions corresponding. In the face of traffic agents, it is necessary that we have all these documents in order, but what to take and what not on top.
We have detected that some information is moving on the Internet regarding the fact that the DGT will begin to penalize if we lack some of these documents, but this is not true. Yes, it is mandatory to have some permissions in order but it is not something new. In fact, the last big changes were applied in 2008 and then in 2020.
What papers do I have to take and which ones not in the car?
As we said, since 2008 it is not necessary to carry with us the insurance policy and the last receipt thereof. Until then, we always had to have it in our glove box folder, but this requirement has not been necessary for fifteen years now.
The last big change came with the miDGT application and this can create more trouble. Since this tool is available, it is not necessary to carry the driving license with us, since we can find it on the mobile phone. Showing it to the agents is enough to identify us as drivers.
However, in addition to the driving license, the DGT also requires the vehicle to have the vehicle registration certificate and the ITV technical sheet. In both cases, from the miDGT application it is possible get the documents (for the technical sheet it is necessary that the car is after 2016). In fact, on the registration certificate there is a button to create a QR code with which the agent can verify that everything shown is true.
However, the fact that it is possible to have these documents digitally does not mean that we should do without physical ones. And from the agency they point out to us that, although driving and circulation licenses in digital format are valid, the car’s technical sheet must be carried in physical format and not only in digital format.
In short, in our car we must carry:
Driver’s license (in digital or physical format) Driving license (in digital or physical format) Technical sheet of the vehicle (in physical format)
Fines and loss
But, what happens if an agent asks us for any of these documents and we don’t have them at hand?
Las sanctions The most common ones related to documentation are the driver’s license. Driving without it (neither physically nor digitally), even if we have it in order) carries a penalty of 60 euros, as it is considered a minor offence. If, on the contrary, we have it expired (serious offence), the amount of the fine amounts to 200 euros.
Finally, very serious offenses are those that are penalized with 500 euros and those that are applied if we drive with the license withdrawn, with the balance of points exhausted or if we have a vehicle for which we do not have a driving license.
It must also be taken into account that if we have not notified the DGT of any change that is necessary to show on the driving license, we will be penalized with 80 euros. And, if we allow a companion without a license to drive the car, we will also be punished with a fine of 200 euros.
Finally, it is necessary to know how to act in case of lose some of the documents before required. The ideal is to report the loss so that, in the event that an agent stops us, we can demonstrate the situation in which we find ourselves.
Next, it is necessary to go to the corresponding Traffic Department to request, again, the driving or circulation permit. It is necessary to request a prior appointment and go with the complaint, the DNI, a passport-size photograph (in the case of the driving license) and pay 20 euros per duplicate document.
In the case of the technical sheet, we will have to go to the ITV with a history of the vehicle requested from the Traffic headship. In this case, we will have to pass the ITV to the car again and, therefore, pay the corresponding fee again, requesting a duplicate of the document to be able to have it in the glove compartment of our car again.
