On March 8, El grito de las mariposas premiered exclusively on Star+, the new exclusive series inspired by the life of the iconic Dominican activist Minerva Mirabalwho along with her sisters became a symbol of the fight against gender violence around the world.
For this reason, Star+ presents the characters from The Cry of the Butterflies made by Pampa Films/Gloriamundi Producciones, the new historical drama is now available on Star+ with all its episodes.
The story follows Minerva and her two sisters Patria and María Teresa, known as “Las Mariposas”, assassinated on November 25, 1960 by order of the dictator Rafael Trujillo and since then become a symbol of the fight against gender violence throughout the world.
The international cast is led by the Dominican actress Sandy Hernández, the Spanish actress Susana Abaitua, the Cuban actor Luis Alberto García and the Spanish actress Belén Rueda.

Originally from the Dominican town of Salcedo, Minerva is an intelligent, cultured, noble woman with a rebellious spirit who has understood the sinister face of the Trujillo regime since her adolescence.. Victim of Trujillo’s harassment, she and her family suffer permanent persecution after rejecting him. Together with her husband, her sisters Patria de ella and María Teresa, her brothers-in-law and a group of her companions, she publicly opposes the tyranny of the Trujillo dictatorship, founding the opposition movement “14 de June”.

Originally from the Basque Country, motherless, she arrives in the Dominican Republic with her father, Asier, after the end of the Spanish Civil War. Arantxa meets and forges a beautiful friendship with Minerva Mirabal when her father is hired to work on the Mirabal family farm. When she gets older, Arantxa moves to the capital, where her life takes a path diametrically opposed to that of her childhood friend. There she meets Petan Trujillo, head of the Dominican radio station and the regime’s nightclub, and then his brother, the president of the country, who facilitate her entry into show business.. Excited to fulfill her dream of being a dancer, Arantxa ends up paying a very high price for achieving her desire. With the arrival of television in the Dominican Republic, she became the presenter of the entertainment program “El show de Gipsy” which became a national event. However, as her life as a celebrity takes hold, she grows further and further away from her father, and begins to experience a personal ordeal.

He governs the Dominican Republic without any scruples, both as president and as leader of the dictatorship. Megalomaniac and narcissistic, he makes the state his personal company, capable of committing atrocities against those who did not support his regime and believing himself to be the owner of all the women in his country. At the time of the Cuban revolution, his regime continued under the excuse of being an anti-communist stronghold in the Caribbean. The murder of the Mirabal sisters, which he tries to disguise as a road accident, marks the beginning of the end of his tyranny.

She is a renowned Spanish writer who is commissioned by a large international publisher to produce a book about the epic life of Minerva Mirabal and her sisters, which will be released in November 1999, within the framework of the establishment of the “Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women” by the UN in relation to the date of the death of the Mirabal sisters. Sharp and rigorous in her research, she appears unexpectedly in San Sebastián, Spain, to interview Arantxa Oyamburu, who, at the time, 72 years old, lives austerely, fully dedicated to teaching dance classes in her small academy.. Pilar’s sagacity will lead Arantxa to unearth a past that mortifies her and reveal facts that allow us to understand not only her behavior, but also the time she had to live in the Caribbean country immersed in an atrocious government regime.

Asier is the father of Arantxa, an intellectual who arrived from the Basque Country in 1939 as an exile with his daughter to the Dominican Republic to work as a teacher, but was destined to work as a rural employee on the Mirabal family farm.. Asier loves politics, but distances himself from it in his first years of exile. A decade later, he moved with his daughter to the capital Ciudad Trujillo, to occupy a long-awaited position at the Autonomous University.

Subordinated to the decisions of his brother the president, who delegates control of the media to him.
