Keanu Reeves has opened up about his work on the action scenes and has explained why the fighting techniques of John Wick 4 should not be compared to those of The Matrix
The work of Keanu Reeves in ‘Matrix‘ has had a clear influence on the new ‘John Wick‘, since its director, Chad Stahelski, was Reeves’ double in the original Neo films. Stahelski recently confirmed that his films in this new saga of the professional assassin are paying a debt of gratitude to the saga and its directors, Lana and Lilly Wachowski.
His work as Neo has been a benchmark in action cinema. And this is well known by the director of the ‘Wick’ franchise. His time with the Wachowski sisters served as a huge master’s degree in cinematography.
Stahelski:
“Nobody had any illusions that it wasn’t going to be impressive. Then David Leitch and I stayed on for ‘V for Vendetta’ and ‘Speed Racer,’ so we kind of had a decade of the Wachowski film school. The John Wicks are definitely children of the Matrix.”
Reeves’ fighting styles in The Matrix and John Wick
Regarding this, Keanu talked about his work in the action scenes, and as a double, and explained why the fight scenes in ‘John Wick 4‘ should not be compared.
During a recent Reddit session, Reeves was asked if he would prefer to learn kung-fu or jiu-jitsu for both franchises respectively. The actor responded by saying that nothing can compare to the unique kung-fu training he underwent as Neo.
Obviously, the actor admitted that he likes all the fighting styles in his movies, but they can’t be compared to each other. And it is not said by a neophyte in the matter, Reeves is a master in various fighting disciplines.
Reeves:
«Nothing can ever compare to the kung-fu training of ‘Matrix’ because it was something unique and my first time. John Wick’s jiu-jitsu, integrated with judo and weapons play, can never be approached in the same way.”
This unique style of action choreography, also known as “gun-fu“, was later nicknamed “Pew Pewtsu» by another user in the Reddit thread.
According to reports, Chapter 4 of this franchise will be the longest Wick movie till the date, with a duration of 2 hours and 49 minutes. In the upcoming film, Wick travels to Paris, France, hoping to convince the High Table, which runs the mysterious society of assassins, to remove the bounty on his head.
Box office projections suggest the film’s opening weekend will gross between $60 million and $70 million domestically, surpassing the record set by ‘Parabellum‘ in 2019.
In addition to the main Wick films, Lionsgate is also developing two spin-offs: a 1970s-set Winston prequel series called ‘The Continental’, and the revenge thriller ‘Ballerina’ starring Wick. Ana de Armas.
