From Superman to Geralt de Rivia, through Sherlock Holmes: why can’t Henry Cavill keep his most successful roles?
Henry Cavill He is one of the most popular and charismatic actors of the moment. His imposing physique, his penetrating gaze and his charming smile have earned him the role of some of the most iconic characters in popular culture, such as Superman, Geralt of Rivia o Sherlock Holmes. However, it seems that the British actor has no luck with his projects, since he has been fired by several of them or he himself has ended up leaving.
One of the last cases is that of The Witcher, the fantastic Netflix series inspired by the books of Andrzej Sapkowski and the video games of the same name. Cavill gave life to the wizard Geralt for three seasons, receiving acclaim from critics and audiences alike for his faithful and charismatic portrayal. However, it was recently announced that the actor was leaving the series for personal and professional reasons, passing the baton to Liam Hemsworth.
According to rumors, one of those reasons would be his return as Superman in the DC movie universe. Cavill debuted as the man of steel in 2013 with the man of steel and reprized the role in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice (2016) y League of Justice (2017). However, after the commercial and critical failure of these films, Warner Bros decided to do without the actor and bet on other projects with new performers.
However, the surprise came when it was confirmed that Cavill would wear the red cape again in a post-credits scene of the movie Black Adam (2022). This appearance aroused the hopes of fans who wanted to see more adventures of the superhero with Cavill at the helm.
But these hopes were dashed when it became known that Warner Bros. had no plans to continue with Cavill as Superman. Apparently, the studio wants to restart the franchise with a new version of the character starring a younger actor, according to the same statement. James Gunn. So it seems that Cavill has been fired twice from the same role. In fact, as we discussed Warner Bros. had been trying to get rid of him for several years.
Another character that has made Cavill famous is Sherlock Holmes. The actor played the famous detective in Enola Holmes (2020), a film based on the YA novels written by Nancy Springer about the investigator’s younger sister, who is played by Millie Bobby-Browna compatriot of Cavill who became famous for her role as Eleven (Eleven) in Stranger Things. The film was a hit on Netflix and received good reviews for its fun and adventurous tone.
However, although some rumors indicated that Cavill would not repeat the role in Enola Holmes 2 (2022), he finally did participate in the film and also had a leading role. However, it has been commented that there has been certain legal problems for using elements of the character created by Arthur Conan Doyle without permission, so its participation in a possible third party is unknown. In addition, it is very likely that Enola wants to make the big leap as a private investigator without being in the shadow of her brother, so maybe we will see a third part without Sherlock Holmes and, consequently, without Henry Cavill.
So, Henry Cavill seems to be experiencing a bad professional streak. Despite being a talented actor and beloved by fans, he has not managed to keep his most successful roles or find other stable projects, since everything that has arisen, such as the option of star in a call of duty movie o participate in the James Bond franchiseThey have been nothing more than possibilities without any of them having fully materialized. And, although James Gunn has confirmed that yes he is going to count on him for his new DCUhaving been written off as Superman, his role is up in the air.
After all this, “conspiracy” ideas about him are already emerging. Is it a matter of bad luck or is there something else behind it? What do you think?
