JAKARTA – Since 2013, the United Nations has celebrated International Day of Happiness every March 20 to highlight the importance of happiness in the lives of people around the world.
According to the United Nations, the success of a country must be judged by how happy its people are.
Last year the world was marked by global crises, including the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic, the war in Ukraine, violence against Palestinians, world inflation, terrible natural disasters and multiple climate emergencies.
With everything going on, which country is the happiest? And which country is the least happy?
The 10 Happiest Countries in 2023
The following are the 10 happiest countries according to the World Happiness Report, which is supported by data from the Gallup World Poll:
1. Finland
2. Denmark
3. Iceland
4. Israel
5. The Netherlands
6. Sweden
7. Norway
8. Swiss
9. Luxembourg
10. New Zealand
The report looks at six key factors to analyze self-reported levels of happiness around the world: social support, income, health, freedom, generosity and absence of corruption.
According to the researchers, governments of various countries are increasingly using such analysis to direct policies towards happiness.
10 Saddest Countries 2023
The report also determines which countries are the happiest or saddest around the world. Conflict-torn Afghanistan and crisis-ridden Lebanon remain the world’s two most unhappy countries, according to the survey.
Surveys show that almost everyone in both countries is unhappy.
Here are the 10 most unhappy countries, ranked from very sad to very unhappy:
1. Afghanistan
2. Lebanon
3. Sierra Leone
4. Zimbabwe
5. Democratic Republic of the Congo
6. Botswana
7. Malawi
8. Chamber
9.Tanzania
10. Zambia
Still according to the survey, Indonesia is ranked 84th in the happiest countries out of a total of 137 countries. Indonesia’s ranking is below Albania and above South Africa.
