Iranian Ayatollah Ali Khamenei says the perpetrators should be severely punished. The poisonings have sparked new protests against the regime in Tehran, which was already experiencing widespread discontent among the population.
Demonstrations
Iranians have been holding large anti-government demonstrations since September. Those protests started after the death of 22-year-old Mahsa Amini. She was arrested by the morality police for allegedly not wearing her headscarf properly and died in detention.
