SEOUL – Military South Korea (South Korea) on Sunday (19/3/2023) reported North Korea (North Korea) fired ballistic missile short distance (SRBM) towards the East Sea. This launch follows a series of previous launches in protest of the South Korean-United States (US) military drills.
South Korea’s Joint Chiefs of Staff (JCS) said it detected a launch from the Tongchang-ri area on North Korea’s west coast at 11:05 a.m. local time. The area is North Korea’s main long-range rocket launch site.
“While strengthening its monitoring and vigilance in preparation for possible additional launches, our military maintains a posture of full readiness in close cooperation with the United States,” JCS said in a text message sent to reporters as reported by South Korea’s Yonhap news agency.
The latest missile launch by North Korea was also reported by the Japanese Ministry of Defense.
The Japan Coast Guard said in a statement that the missile launched by North Korea appeared to have landed.
The Japanese Coast Guard then warned all ships to wait for more information, not to go near fallen objects, and to report anything suspicious.
North Korea has ratcheted up tensions as South Korea and the US conduct regular Freedom Shield drills that Pyongyang says are preparing for a war of aggression against it.
The 11-day war games will end on Thursday.
