After the acquisition of Activision Blizzard, the issue of video game exclusivities has once again become relevant, especially with regard to the agreements between Square Enix and PlayStation. These deals have led to titles like Final Fantasy VII Remake, Forspoken, and the upcoming Final Fantasy XVI being exclusive to Sony consoles, with some versions also available on PC. Given this, Square Enix was consulted about its current and future approach in terms of publishing strategies on platforms.
During a question and answer session with investors (via Tweak Town), amid an internal crisis due to the disappointing results of recent launches, the Japanese company addressed the issue of publishing strategies on multiple platforms. Square Enix stated that their focus on cross-platform will not change and will continue as before, which means that they will maintain exclusivity agreements with PlayStation, releasing games on Nintendo, Microsoft and Sony consoles as they see fit, and in some cases on PC as well. . It is important to note that Octopath Traveler II is not available on Xbox.
This news may prove discouraging for Final Fantasy fans who were hoping to see the remake of the seventh title and the upcoming release on Xbox. However, it seems that these games will remain exclusive to the PlayStation console, with the PC option in the case of the remake.
It is interesting to remember that in 2019, following a series of meetings between Phil Spencer and Japanese publishers/developers, Microsoft excitedly announced the arrival of several Final Fantasy installments on Xbox Game Pass. At the time, it was thought that Xbox and Square Enix would have a closer relationship. Despite this, over time it has been shown that while many games from the Japanese company are still considered for Xbox, some of the most important titles will continue to be exclusive to PlayStation.
