Quoting Reuters, Tuesday (21/3/2023), after being accused of war crimes, Putin actually visited Russian-occupied Mariupol.
Previously, Mariupol was known to be one of the battle locations for the Russian and Ukrainian armies. In the end, the city managed to fall into the hands of Russian troops last May.
So, what exactly did Putin do by coming to Mariupol?
Reasons for Vladimir Putin’s Visit to Mariupol
Putin’s visit to Mariupol has been interpreted differently by some observers. First, this activity was considered a form of defiance after the ICC issued an arrest warrant for the Russian President.
In addition, critics say that this Putin seems to be a “perpetrator” who returns to the scene of the incident. He is thought to have come to Mariupol to admire the city’s destruction.
However, state media said that was not Putin’s reason for coming to Mariupol. Local Russian TV showed him giving directions to Deputy Prime Minister Khusnullin in the car.
In this regard, Putin gave detailed instructions regarding the rebuilding of destroyed housing, bridges, hospitals, transport routes and other infrastructure in the city.
Apart from that, state media also shows the President of Russia visiting new settlements that were previously created to accommodate residents affected by the conflict.
Furthermore, Putin visited Mariupol after his visit to Crimea. He traveled by helicopter.
It didn’t stop there, Vladimir Putin left for Rostov in Southern Russia after being in Mariupol. State TV said he would later meet Russian Army General Staff Chief Valery Gerasimov.
