With each passing day we get closer to the release of Final Fantasy XVI, the next big installment in the Japanese role-playing franchise. While expectations are through the roof, a section of the community regrets that the title debuts first on PlayStation 5 and that the PC port is up in the air. However, it seems that Square Enix had its reasons for signing the temporary exclusivity agreement.

During a recent interview with the Japanese media 4Gamer, Naoki Yoshida, producer of the next title in the series, revealed that they had the support of Sony Interactive Entertainment personnel during development, especially regarding technical issues.

According to the Japanese creative, the intervention of PlayStation was an important factor for Square Enix to decide to sign the exclusivity agreement. Furthermore, he reveals that the “generous support” provided by SIE engineers expedited the production of the project.
“From our point of view, the technical support we receive from the hardware manufacturer is an important factor in signing some contracts. This time, there was a part where we developed together with SIE engineers, who know the hardware inside out. We received generous support in optimization that we couldn’t manage on our own and so on,” Yoshi-P highlighted.

On the other hand, Naoki Yoshida commented that focusing on the PlayStation 5 version without having to worry about ports to other platforms allowed the development team to invest more hours of work in game creation and optimization.
We must remember that the temporary exclusive of Final Fantasy XVI will last 6 months. However, the producer has already commented that, when that period ends, he sees it as unlikely that the port for PC will debut. This is because half a year is a short time to optimize the version for computers.
“If we start optimizing the PC version after the PS5 version is released, we won’t be able to do it for 6 months, so it won’t be released within that time. We would like to release it eventually, and we think we will, but right now we’re not at the stage where we can say when,” said the creative.
