Ahead of The Super Mario Bros. movie’s release, Ebuyer has revealed the top-grossing video game film adaptations of all time, taking into account critics’ ratings, audience ratings and box office receipts.
Sonic the Hedgehog (2020) ranked first as the most successful adaptation, while Alone in the Dark (2005) came in last. From PC and console gaming to the big screen, some of our favorite video game characters have received the Hollywood treatment over the years. So what are the brightest gems when it comes to game movie adaptations? Below are the top ten most successful game movie adaptations according to research:
Sonic the Hedgehog (2020) ranked in the top ten with the 2020 adaptation at the top of the list. Not only did the film break the record for best opening for a video game movie, grossing over $58 million, but it’s also a fan favorite with a 93% audience rating on Rotten Tomatoes, earning a respectable rating from critics. critics too, with an average of 63%.
Although the original animated movies failed to break into the top ten, the live-action Detective Pikachu (2019) came in second, with Ryan Reynolds starring as the iconic pocket monster. Also grossing an impressive $54 million upon its release, it also earned the second highest score from critics on Rotten Tomatoes with 68%. Uncharted comes in third, despite being released in 2022, it has grossed more than $148 million so far, thanks to an all-star cast that includes Tom Holland and Mark Wahlberg.
The Least Successful Film Adaptations of Video Games
As for the most failed game movies, the top ten were revealed:
Alone in the Dark (2005) took the crown for most unsuccessful video game movie, with an aggregate score of just 0.15 out of 6, earning a respectably terrible critics rating of 1%. This led to the adaptation being nominated for a Stinkers Bad Movie Award for Worst Picture and Tara Reid being awarded Worst Actress. SEGA’s adaptation of the franchise House Of The Dead (2003) was slightly more successful with only a 3% critical rating and grossing only $5,500,000 at the total box office.
Commenting on the research, Courtney Williamson, Marketing Manager at Ebuyer said: “In recent years there has been a resurgence in film and TV series adaptations of video games, with series like The Last Of Us being a hit with audiences. With movies like The Super Mario Bros. and Sonic the Hedgehog 3 slated for release this year, we wanted to go for the best of the best so gamers themselves wouldn’t have to.”
