Shooting Action at Nashville School Kills 3 Children. PHOTOS/Reuters
NASHVILLE – At least three children and two adults were killed in action shooting at a private Christian school in Nashville, Tennessee, United States of America (US) on Monday (27/3/2023) morning local time. According to the police, the shooter died in a shootout with the security forces.
As reported by Reuters, the shooting took place at The Covenant School. The Metropolitan Nashville Police Department said in a statement that the suspect was dead. However, the police did not explain what caused the death. It was not stated whether the suspect was male or female.
“Three children were pronounced dead upon arrival at Monroe Carell Jr. Children’s Hospital. in Vanderbilt with gunshot wounds,” said John Howser, a spokesman for the hospital, in a statement.
The hospital later confirmed two adults had also died. It was not immediately clear whether the shooter was among the five deaths reported by the hospital.
The Nashville Fire Department said on Twitter they were responding to the scene and there were many patients. Parents of students were asked to gather at the nearest church.
Covenant School, founded in 2001, is a ministry of the Covenant Presbyterian Church in Nashville with about 200 students, according to the school’s website. The school serves preschool through 6th graders and is holding an active shooter training program in 2022, WTVF-TV reports.
Police said they first got calls about the shooter at 10:13 a.m. CT and the Nashville firefighters first reported their personnel responding to an “active assailant” at 10:39 a.m. CT.
“The police department’s response was swift,” police spokesman Don Aaron told reporters. “They heard gunshots from the second floor. They opened fire immediately. When officers went up to the second floor, they saw a shooter. He was shot dead by responding police.”
