The first to see the horror of the Cutro shipwreck with his own eyes was a fisherman named Vincenzo, like Iaquinta, world champion in Berlin, born in Cutro. At dawn last Sunday, Vincenzo entered the sea that gives him a living and tried to snatch from death the desperate people who left Turkey and were shipwrecked a few meters from the Calabrian coast. He paid no attention to the swelling waves or the risks, only to narrow the contours of the tragedy before him: corpses and floating wooden carcasses. He thought he’d made it when he pulled a 3-year-old body out of the water. “He had his eyes open. I was convinced he was alive. Instead he was dead. I closed them for him and set him down on the sand. I see those eyes every night. I don’t have to sleep, I have to stay awake. Otherwise I see them again”.
