“Starlink now offers a global roaming option for customers traveling to locations where there is no or unreliable internet,” reports SpaceX. The new service seems to be aimed at digital nomads: people who can work anywhere in the world. The Roam subscription can be used in all places where Starlink is available and costs no less than 230 euros per month. The ‘regional’ version of the service costs EUR 105 per month and only works on the same continent. The subscription can be canceled monthly.
Starlink has also been available in the Netherlands since May 2021. The satellite internet service is now active in 50 countries, including the entire EU, the US, Canada, Mexico, Australia, New Zealand, Japan, several South American countries and two African countries. The satellite internet for home use costs 85 euros per month.
Thousands of satellites
SpaceX has already launched more than 3,500 Starlink satellites and plans to put thousands more into orbit in the coming years. The company recently received approval from the American regulator FCC to launch another 7,500 new satellites.
Campers, ships and planes
Users of the new Roam subscription also have to buy a receiver for 450 euros. It does not work when used in moving vehicles. Starlink has another special terminal for this, which is suitable for use on moving campers, for example. It costs $ 2500, but is not yet available everywhere. Starlink Roam only works on land. For use at sea there is a special subscription that is much more expensive: $ 5000 per month.
SpaceX will also offer Starlink in aircraft. For example, the internet service will soon be available on flights to and from Hawaii.
