“I had to work at low intensity because the team needed to recover. I saw a bit of fatigue, the result of the previous three weeks and the complexity of the opponents I faced. We had two days less work than our opponent, I wanted to slow down the pace to guarantee athletic freshness in view of tomorrow’s race. It is not the system that determines, but the idea. I want a Salernitana who knows how to be intense defensively and proactive in attack. Bologna are healthy, are ninth in the standings and are two points behind Juventus. They practice modern football thanks to my colleague Thiago Motta, their high-intensity 4-2-3-1 takes away time and space so as not to allow the opponent to build. We will try to get them down and create some difficulties for them, I’m imagining what the match will be like and tomorrow you’ll find out who the protagonists will be. We want to give pride and happiness to a passionate city that, who knows, could one day reach international levels”.
“The collective comes before the individual – continues Sousa – in this respect I will be intransigent and I demand it. I expect continuity, of course, but this comes from tranquillity, balance, awareness of the difficulty of the race. Having achieved a result in Milan does not mean having become perfect, it takes awareness that Bologna will oppose with a precise tactical attitude that will make the road uphill. At home and away I want the same attitude, with full Arechi that motivates us in times of difficulty we can overcome obstacles. It is the people who must push us to victory, to achieve triumph we need the union with the people and it is up to us to drag them to our side. I want an environment that isn’t too pumped up or too depressed and that goes beyond the Sunday result.”
On attitude: “Tomorrow I want the fans to feel well represented, they are our strength.We have to convey to people that sense of belonging that must distinguish us day after day. I expect a very difficult match, we could make mistakes and that’s where the crowd has to help us, motivate us and push us towards victory. The Arechi must be like this. If they can make a big contribution away from home, let alone how much they can give us when we play in our stadium. If we are united we can build a high-level future for Salerno and for Salernitana. Tomorrow will be a good test also from a tactical point of view, given that Bologna are very different from the teams they have faced so far”.
On the modulo: “You really like numbers, the data says that the goals didn’t come from the forwards but from the midfielders. Everyone will have the chance to score, we have people capable of being dangerous in the offensive zone. Tomorrow I will need both Dia and Piatek. They have shown me that they are ready, regardless of who goes behind their backs.”
