MOSCOW – Russia’s Federal Security Service (FSB) claims to have thwarted a Ukrainian bomb plot targeting the owner of a conservative Russian television channel.
The claim was disclosed by the FSB on Monday (6/3/2023). The FSB has pinned the alleged assassination attempt on a Russian-born Neo-Nazi based in Ukraine, who claims involvement in last week’s cross-border attack.
“The plot apparently involved planting a bomb on the car of billionaire Russian businessman Konstantin Malofeev, owner of the Christian-focused TV channel Tsargrad,” the FSB statement said.
The plan has been compared to the murder of political activist and journalist Darya Dugina, whose car was blown up last August near Moscow. The FSB accuses the murder of being orchestrated by the Ukrainian special services.
The FSB has named Denis Kapustin, leader of the so-called Russian Volunteer Corps (RDK), as the latest mastermind of the conspiracy.
The statement described Kapustin as “acting under the control of the SBU,” the Ukrainian Security Service.
Kapustin came under international media scrutiny last week after his organization carried out a cross-border attack in Russia’s Bryansk Region.
He claimed the operation was authorized by the Ukrainian government, contradicting statements by Ukrainian officials, who distanced Kiev from him.
