KIEV – Minister of Foreign Affairs Ukraine Dmytro Kuleba opened his voice regarding the possibility that Russia will become the president of the UN Security Council (DK). He thought it was a bad joke.
“Russia’s presidency of the UN Security Council on April 1 is a bad joke. Russia has taken its seat; (the country) waged colonial wars; the leader is a war criminal wanted by the ICC for kidnapping children. The world cannot be a safe place with Russia in the UN Security Council,” Kuleba said on Twitter as quoted by Anadolu, Thursday (30/3/2023).
The United Nations Security Council has 15 members and each member holds the presidency for one month in rotation, following British alphabetical order. Russia will become president on Saturday or April 1.
Under the UN Charter, all members are obliged to comply with the decisions of the UN Security Council, whose primary responsibility is the maintenance of international peace and security.
Last December, Ukraine’s Foreign Ministry claimed that Russia’s UN membership status and permanent seat on the Security Council after the dissolution of the Soviet Union remained “uncertain” from an “international law point of view.”
It said Russia failed to meet key criteria for membership in the UN, referring to the first paragraph of Article 4 of the UN Charter, which says “membership in the UN is open to all peace-loving nations,” alluding to Moscow’s launch of a “special military operation” in Ukraine.
