Of the 35 goals scored by the Giallorossi, 13 are from Joya. To hope to override one between Milan, Inter and Lazio, a sign of life from the entire offensive department will be needed
The starvation of the Giallorossi forwards risks costing José Mourinho and his Roma dearly. Without a shock in terms of goals scored by Abraham & co. in fact, the road to qualifying for the next Champions League could become even more uphill. Currently the fourth place occupied by Milan is only one point away but – after the break – to be able to get a pass for Europe that matters most, Special One will necessarily need a change of pace from the offensive department.
DYBALA ONLY
—
For now, the only one who has lived up to expectations has been Paulo Dybala. La Joya has scored 13 goals overall – 9 in Serie A – and leads the Giallorossi’s scoring chart despite being forced to stop for almost a month between October and November. From this point of view, however, Tammy Abraham is perhaps the most sore point: after closing the first season in Italy with 27 goals, this year the Englishman is stuck at 7 (6 in the league). A return that the former Chelsea player risks paying with his starting position. In fact, in recent weeks Mourinho has preferred Andrea Belotti, who has shown an enormous desire to sacrifice himself for the Roma cause. Despite the commitment, however, Gallo still leaves something to be desired in terms of goals: the 4 goals scored with the Roma shirt came between the Italian Cup and the Europa League. Lorenzo Pellegrini’s only 2 goals in Serie A came from penalties (5 goals this season) while El Shaarawy is still at 3 goals in the league and 1 in Europe. Only one goal instead for Ola Solbakken – who arrived in Trigoria at the beginning of January – and Cristian Volpato.

After 27 days, despite Roma having scored more points than last season, it is the team’s goal average that is worrying. There are 35 goals scored, even 10 fewer than last year, with an average of 1.35 goals per game in Serie A. Too little for those hoping to finish in the top four. In fact, if the Giallorossi confirmed the current average, they would end the championship with 52 goals: a figure that was hardly enough to reach the Champions League zone. It happened at Inter in 2015/16 – with 50 goals – when, however, only the top three in the class got a place in the top European competition. Since then, the minimum required to qualify has been at least 57 goals (enough for Inter to finish fourth in 2018/19 and for Juventus last season). Therefore, to hope to override one between Milan, Inter and Lazio, a sign of life will be needed from the Roma forwards. Participation in the next Champions League depends above all on them.
