Redfall was also originally in development for PlayStation 5but plans changed when Microsoft acquired the holding company in 2020 ZeniMaxof which arcane it is subsidiary.
This was confirmed by studio director Arkane Austin, Harvey Smithwho confirmed that plans for a PlayStation version were canceled after Microsoft acquired Bethesda’s parent companyZeniMax Media.
Indeed, Smith told IGN France:
“We were acquired by Microsoft and it was a capital C change. They came in and said ‘No PlayStation 5, we are focusing on Xbox, PC and Game Pass“.
Development of Redfall had begun a year before the acquisition $7.5 billion from Microsoft.
“It wasn’t very bad, I think it’s a good decision too,” Smith said of abandoning the PS5 version. “It helped support Game Pass and have one less platform to worry about, one less complexity.”
He added: “Game Pass has a lot of players, it could become our biggest game thanks to 30 million, I don’t remember the exact number, of subscribers.”
In another recent interview, Smith said that Arkane is “looking into” removing the requirement for single player players to always be connected online.
