The organization tweeted about the event:
“We confirm that the two ICRC employees kidnapped on March 4 between (the towns of) Gao and Kidal, northern Mali, have been released this evening. Our colleagues are doing well and have been released unharmed and unconditionally. We thank everyone which contributed to their release.”
Unrest in Mali
Kidnappings are common in Mali. The country has been plagued by political and military unrest for years. In January, a doctor from the World Health Organization (WHO) was also kidnapped. He was released in February.
The country in the West African Sahel with about 20 million inhabitants has experienced three coups since 2012. Since the last coup in 2021, it has been led by a pro-Russian military government.
