THE HAGUE – Piotr Hofmanski became in the public spotlight after his announcement regarding the warrant for the arrest of Russian President Vladimir Putin on Friday (17/3/2023).
Quoting the Reuters page, Monday (20/2/2023), Hofmanski, who has the status of president of the International Criminal Court (ICC), considers Putin to be responsible for war crimes in Ukraine.
As previously known, Russia has launched an invasion of Ukraine since February 24, 2022. To date, it appears that Moscow has not planned or has any intention of withdrawing its troops.
Of the many international reactions condemning the Russian invasion, the latest was the announcement regarding a warrant for Putin’s arrest by the International Criminal Court (ICC). This was announced by ICC President Hofmanski.
Profile of ICC President Piotr Hofmanski
Hofmanski is a Polish jurist and judge who is currently President of the International Criminal Court (ICC). The man who was born on March 6, 1956 is an alumnus of Nicolaus Copernicus University in Torun.
He received his law doctorate from the university in 1981. Starting his academic career as an assistant to the Chair of the Criminal Procedure Law at Nicolaus Copernicus University, he received another offer after receiving his PhD.
Since 2000, Hofmanski has been a Professor at the Jagiellonian University in Krakow. Not only that, he is also known to hold the Chair of Criminal Procedure Law.
He began his judicial career in 1994 when he was a judge at the Court of Appeal in Bialystok. Two years later, he was appointed as a criminal judge of the Polish Supreme Court.
In his career, Hofmanski has been involved in several projects carried out by the European Council. In this case, his status is as a member of the Committee of Experts of the Council of Europe for the 2001-2002 period.
In 2004, he was appointed as a member of the Committee of Experts on Transnational Justice. This Council was created to continue the work of the Council of Europe expert committee.
After a long struggle to become a Supreme Court justice for criminal matters, Hofmanski was appointed a judge at the International Criminal Court (ICC) with a term of 2015-2024. He became the first Pole to occupy this position.
In addition to these duties, in 2021 Piotr Hofmanski was appointed President of the International Criminal Court (ICC).
He still holds this position until now, including when he announced the warrant for the arrest of Russian President Vladimir Putin.
