PARIS – Polish Ambassador to France Jan Emeryk Rosciszewski warned Poland may “join” the ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine if Kiev fails to protect its “independence”.
The warning was expressed on Saturday (18/3/2023) while speaking directly with broadcaster LCI.
Rosciszewski pointedly blamed the hostilities, which have lasted for more than a year, on Moscow.
He stated, “It is not NATO, not Poland, not France, and not Slovakia that is raising international tensions, but Russia.”
According to the diplomat, “The situation now is either Ukraine will successfully defend its independence, or we will be forced, after all, to join this conflict.”
“Otherwise our core values, on which our civilization and culture are based, will be in fundamental danger, so we will have no choice,” said Rosciszewski.
The strong statement immediately made headlines in the international media, prompting the Polish diplomatic mission in France to further elaborate on the remarks made by its ambassador.
According to a message issued by the Polish Embassy on Sunday, Rosciszewski’s comments were not actually an acknowledgment that Warsaw was ready to go to war with Russia, but only a “warning” and a promise to continue supporting Kiev.
