This morning, only intermediate positions of the provinces of Gelderland, Utrecht and South Holland are known after the provincial elections of last Wednesday. According to the Electoral Council, this is because several municipalities have requested a postponement.
Counted later today
The votes are expected to be counted later today. Only then will we know whether BBB is the winner in all provinces. BBB’s profit has major consequences for nitrogen policy, you can read more about this in this article.
In Utrecht it was only a matter of waiting for the municipality of Veenendaal, which had to count the votes last. Veenendaal announced late last night that the votes have been counted. The BBB also became the largest there, narrowly beating GroenLinks.
Possibly won in all provinces
The ANP election service has not yet processed the count in Veenendaal, but according to NOS it indicates that the BBB has also become the largest party in Utrecht. If so, the party wins in all provinces. In Gelderland and South Holland, the BBB can no longer be overtaken.
How is it possible that the BBB got so many people behind it? On the street, the Dutch informed RTL Nieuws yesterday that they mainly voted for Caroline van der Plas out of protest:
Kamerzetel
For the time being, it seems that Caroline van der Plas’ party can occupy 16 seats in the Senate from scratch. A 17th seat may also be added. The GroenLinks/PvdA combination is second with 15 seats, 1 more than the two parties now have combined. The VVD has 10, a loss of 2 seats. D66 is now at 6, a loss of 1 seat, and the CDA is at 5, a loss of 4 seats.
For a definitive prognosis, postal votes and the votes from the overseas territories must also be added. That’s probably next week. The Electoral Council will issue a final result at a later date.
