SEOUL – North Korea (North Korea) confirmed the launch of two medium-range ballistic missiles. The country has warned that its military will surely annihilate the enemy if they resist, state media has reported.
The missile was fired last Tuesday and was reported by the military South Korea (Carousel), United States of America (US) and Japan .
North Korea’s KCNA news agency reported that the test was carried out by a missile unit of the Korean People’s Army in the Jangyon area of South Hwanghae province, which is located in the southwest of the country.
“The unit launched two surface-to-ground tactical ballistic missiles in a medium-range system for teaching demonstrations,” said the KCNA report as quoted by UPI, Wednesday (15/3/2023).
Photos in North Korean state media appear to indicate that the missile is a KN-23, a short-range maneuverable ballistic missile similar to Russia’s Iskander missile. The missile reportedly hit a target island about 380 miles away in the sea off the northeastern coast.
“Saying that they will definitely annihilate the enemy if they fight against him, the unit commander explained that the missiles really have the ability to carry out the task fully in attack at any time by further intensifying each armed fighting company,” KCNA said.
The weapons test was the latest by North Korea during the US-South Korean joint Freedom Shield military drills, which began last Monday and are scheduled to last until March 23.
Earlier on Sunday, North Korea fired a cruise missile from a submarine and launched at least six short-range ballistic missiles into the sea three days earlier in what the country’s leader, Kim Jong-un, called preparation for a true war response.
North Korea frequently denounces joint US-South Korean drills as preparations for an invasion and last month warned of an “unprecedented and determined resistance” to the drills.
