Although Nintendo Switch remains the preferred console for fans of the Japanese company, there are still dozens of players who enjoy the Wii U catalog. However, 2 major titles on the platform found it necessary to shut down their servers.
As reported by the VGC portal, Nintendo announced that it temporarily closed the servers for Mario Kart 8 and Splatoon for Wii U. In the statement, it announced that maintenance work has already begun and apologized for any inconvenience this announcement may cause to community.
“We have identified vulnerabilities with online gaming for these network services and have begun temporary emergency maintenance. We expect an extended duration of maintenance while we address these issues and have yet to determine when online play will resume. We sincerely apologize for this inconvenience and appreciate your understanding.”
As Nintendo itself comments in its statement, it is unknown when the online services of Mario Kart 8 and Splatoon will return. During downtime, users will be unable to access the online modes of both titles.

Why did the servers for Mario Kart and Splatoon on Wii U shut down?
Although it is a mystery what are the “vulnerabilities” that the Japanese company refers to in its message, the community already has its theories.
Specifically, the well-known dataminer OatmealDome indicated on his Twitter account that the security problem is most likely related to an exploit known as ENLBufferPwn, which allows an offender to take control of the victim’s console.

Nintendo has taken down the servers for these games and begun “emergency temporary maintenance” due to a security vulnerability.

According to the user, this exploit could be used to steal credit card information or take unauthorized videos and photos with the consoles’ built-in cameras and microphones.
Titles like Mario Kart 7 on the 3DS and Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, Animal Crossing: New Horizons, Super Mario Maker 2, Nintendo Switch Sports, Arms, Splatoon 2, and Splatoon 3 on the Nintendo Switch were also targeted by this exploit. However, Nintendo took action on the matter and released patches to ensure the safety of users.
However, Mario Kart 8 and Wii U’s Splatoon did not receive an update. So it is possible that the purpose of maintenance is to fix this problem.
