Sword Art Online (published by Dengeki Bunko) is a series of light novels authored by Reki Kawaharawinner of the 15th Dengeki Bunko Novel Grand Prize.
The story revolves around Kirito and his heroism as a player of Sword Art Online, a game VRMMORPG (virtual reality massive multiplayer online role-playing game). The novel series has been immensely popular since its first volume and was first published in April 2009, with cumulative worldwide sales surpassing 30 million copies by 2022.
As an anime adaptation, Sword Art Online Season 1 aired in 2012, followed by four more seasons to date. In 2017, the film, Sword Art Online The Movie: Ordinal Scale, was released. Additionally, the franchise has produced a wide range of games, manga, and more.
Sword Art Online Progressive is a remake of the light novels written by Kawahara, which offer a deeper look at where it all began, on the first floor of Aincrad.
A new animated film adaptation based on the Progressive novels was released in 2021. The first film in the series, Aria From A Starless Night, a remake of the Aincrad arc seen from Asuna’s point of view, debuted at No. 1 at the Japanese weekend box office and was a continued success, holding theaters across the country for 10 weeks. Now, its sequel, Scherzo De Una Profunda Oscuridad, will hit Mexican theaters on March 30, taking audiences back to where it all began.
