After the bad accidents during the race weekend in Portimao, here’s an update on the physical conditions of the two riders
March 29, 2023
It’s a decimated MotoGP. The first Grand Prix of the year saw many riders get injured, in fact, many will miss the race to be held in Argentina this weekend. There are though some good news on the physical conditions of Pol Espargaro, victim of a very bad accident that took place during FP2 in Portimao and of Enea Bastianini, who was instead injured after a crash during the second lap of the Sprint on Saturday.
The conditions of Pol Espargaro
Four days after the accident, Pol Espargaró shared on social media a photo taken in the intensive care unit of the Dexeus University Hospital in Barcelona, where he was hospitalized late last Saturday evening. The GASGAS pilot writes in the caption of the post a hopeful message: “Thanks for the love of friends, I’ll be back at full capacity in no time.” In the photo, next to Pol is his wife Carlotta, who hasn’t abandoned him since Friday afternoon.
Since after the race Pol’s brother, Aleix Espargarois in the hospital with him and in an interview with radio Catalunya spoke about the condition of his younger brother: “It fits well in the gravity of the situation.” Aleix also let slip that Pol: “He will almost certainly undergo surgery” (which probably took place yesterday) to intervene on the jaw, while the rest of the injuries and fractures “should not be operated on”.
Pol Espargaro’s recovery time will unfortunately be long. There is no specific information on a hypothetical return date.
The conditions of Enea Bastianini
Control visits have been positive for the Ducati rider. Despite the bad fall resulting in a scapula fracture, there is good news. Luckily the fracture is ti compound type and from next Monday the pilot will begin rehabilitation.
There are good hopes that Enea can return to compete again in the GP of the Americas, in Austin, in about two weeks. Therefore, the hypothesis of his possible return this weekend Argentina has been denied. Will be fundamental that Enea has fully recovered his physical condition, so as to be competitive: “It must be worth it”.
