How different it is with the ‘rich’ Lorraine and her best friend Merve who enjoy luxury in Istanbul. They have 1800 euros per week to spend. According to the program, Lorraine is a celebrity in Turkey and can often be seen on TV. She also works in the world of plastic surgery.
Mother Christa has had a difficult time. She has worked in care for years, but due to physical problems she ends up on welfare. “When birthdays arrive, I hold my heart again. One can still be overseen, but sometimes you have three in a month. Then it gets a bit more spicy.”
The two are thrilled that they can go to Istanbul. “How cool,” says Christa. Daughter Mandy is completely overwhelmed. “I feel a lot of tension, but I’m also looking forward to it.” They jump a hole in the air.
After they have had an extensive dinner, they also go out for breakfast the next morning. There they are served delicious dishes. “What a treat,” says Christa. Then of course you also have to pay: 50 euros. And that is the amount that Christa has to spend every week. “Normally you just wouldn’t do this. If you do it you’ll be out of food for the rest of the week. It’s just really bizarre,” she says.
In Leeuwarden, Lorraine and Merve also go out for dinner. It is immediately their ‘budget getaway’. In addition to lunch, the two can also play miniature golf for a bargain price of 3 euros per person. Lunch consists of a bowl of fries.
The participants meet one week after their experience. Lorraine and Merve have been very cold in Christa and Mandy’s house. They decide to help them with the utility bill. This makes Christa very emotional. “That’s totally crazy,” she says with tears in her eyes.
