Since November, thousands of girls across Iran have been poisoned at school with an unknown substance. After smelling an unfamiliar odour, they suffered from dizziness, nausea and breathing problems, among other things. Images of the poisonings came out in dribs and drabs:
It is not yet clear why the girls were poisoned. The Iranian government spoke of the arrests of people for the purpose of ‘instilling terror among the people and students, and closing schools’.
The government also discussed a possible link with an opposition group in exile in Albania, the Iranian People’s Mujahideen (MEK). That group wants to overthrow the regime of Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and has been labeled terrorist by the Iranian regime.
Last week, the Iranian government also announced that it had arrested a number of suspects. They would live in five different provinces, but how many people were involved was not disclosed.
