KUALA LUMPUR – Families of the plane victims Malaysia Airlines MH370 prompted the search to return after a technology company said it had new evidence.
Families of the victims of Malaysia Airlines MH370 have called on the Malaysian government to give the go-ahead to search for the plane that mysteriously disappeared nine years ago.
The disappearance of the plane, carrying 12 Malaysian crew members and 227 passengers from 14 different countries, became the biggest mystery in aviation after it disappeared in the South China Sea during a flight from Kuala Lumpur to Beijing on March 8, 2014.
After a three-year manhunt coordinated by Malaysia, China and Australia ended in January 2017, no conclusions have been drawn about what happened to flight MH370.
US marine robotics company Ocean Infinity then conducted a second search for the craft in the Indian Ocean in 2018 which ended in failure. However, they now say they have new evidence that could lead to the discovery of the plane.
Voice370, a group of relatives of the plane’s passengers, urged Malaysian authorities to support Ocean Infinity’s re-search.
“While the closest relatives of passengers and crew on board seek to rebuild our lives, threats to global aviation safety remain an immediate problem,” the group said in a statement.
“As long as we remain in the dark about what happened to MH370, we will never be able to prevent a similar tragedy. Therefore, we believe that it is a matter of great importance that the search for MH370 be carried out to completion,” the statement continued as quoted by The Guardian, Thursday (9/3/2023).
Oliver Plunkett, chief executive of Ocean Infinity, told Guardian Australia the company was “actively involved” in trying to start the search.
