According to them, European countries would support Libyan armed forces, which in turn contribute to crimes against the migrants.
Indirect contribution Europe
Evidence of crimes against humanity has been found in the detention centers where migrants stopped at sea are taken, according to researcher Chaloka Beyani.
The migrants have been brought to these centers by the Libyan coastguard and Europe supports and trains this coastguard, which would indirectly contribute to the crimes.
These range from crimes ranging from arbitrary detention to rape. Beyani: “We are not saying that Europe is carrying out these crimes, but the point is that Europe indirectly contributes to the crimes being committed”.
The investigation that led to the evidence was commissioned by the UN Human Rights Council. The intention is that the findings will be shared with the International Criminal Court (ICC) in The Hague, so that individuals can be held accountable for the crimes.
Continuous stream of migrants
Libya has been in a state of chaos for years and all these years many migrants have been trying to reach Europe from the country. Last weekend alone, some 2,000 people arrived in Lampedusa, an Italian island in the Mediterranean Sea, within 24 hours.
This was a record number of migrants arriving here in boats from North Africa. The journey is not without risks, but nevertheless people continue to risk their lives.
