The fight for the purchase of Activision Blizzard continues with statements by Microsoft. On this occasion, the company responsible for Xbox told the UK Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) that 10 years is enough for Sony to make an alternative to Call of Duty. This after the house of PlayStation assures that the franchise is “irreplaceable”.
Let’s remember that, in its mission to convince the competition authorities to authorize the purchase of Activision Blizzard, Microsoft offered agreements that guarantee 10 years of Call of Duty to companies such as Nintendo, Nvidia and others. This is an agreement that they have also offered to PlayStation; however, its directors have rejected it.

Now, in a new document, Microsoft argues that there is no reason to offer a longer deal to Sony. The foregoing since he considers that a decade is enough time for PlayStation studios to develop an alternative to Call of Duty to offer its consumers.
“The CMA asked Microsoft if the duration of 10 years is enough and if there will not be a cliff edge for Sony at the end of this period. The 10-year period is (removed),” Microsoft explained. “Microsoft believes that a period of 10 years is sufficient for Sony, as a leading distributor and console platform, to develop alternatives to Call of Duty.”
In its statement, Microsoft also explained that its agreement will extend to the next generation of consoles.
In addition, the effects of the agreement will go further, since the games “downloaded in the final year of the agreement can continue to be played for the life cycle of the console (and beyond through backward compatibility).”
In closing, Microsoft noted that the 10-year agreement is equal to or longer than license agreements made in other acquisitions. “While Microsoft is prepared to discuss this constructively with the CMA, there is no basis for extending the agreement beyond the period originally proposed by Microsoft.”

“According to a 2019 study, ‘Call of Duty’s importance to entertainment, in general, is indescribable.’ The brand was the only video game franchise to crack the top 10 of all entertainment brands among fans, joining powerhouses like Star Wars, Game of Thrones, Harry Potter and The Lord of the Rings.
Call of Duty is so popular that it influences users’ console choice, and its community of loyal users is deep enough that even if a competitor had the budget to develop a similar product, they couldn’t compete with it.” Sony said.
