Despite an own goal by Ajax midfielder Edson Álvarez, the Mexican football players have reached the semi-finals of the Concacaf Nations League. A draw against Jamaica (2-2) was enough for the team of the new national coach Diego Cocca to finish first in the group. Mexico trailed Jamaica by 2 points.
Álvarez unintentionally made it 1-2 after more than half an hour of play in the Aztec Stadium in Mexico City. A corner kick from Jamaica was slightly brushed along the way, after which the Ajax player worked the ball into the goal with his knee. Former PSV player Hirving Lozano equalized from a penalty just before half-time.
With Álvarez and defender Jorge Sánchez, two Ajax players were in the starting line-up. Érick Gutiérrez (PSV) and Santiago Giménez (Feyenoord) remained on the bench. They played against Suriname on Thursday evening. Giménez then missed a penalty kick, but Mexico nevertheless won 2-0 in Paramaribo.
The so-called Final Four of the Nations League in the Concacaf zone will be held in June in the American city of Las Vegas.
